Dementia is not a specific disease; it is a collection of symptoms that affect memory, behaviors, judgment, and emotions, so much so that it interferes with daily functioning. This includes difficulty speaking, understanding and expressing thoughts, wandering, repeating questions, losing interest in everyday activities, acting impulsively, and having movement problems.
An underlying disease-causing neurodegeneration causes dementia. In a previous article, we discussed some diseases under the umbrella.
Dementia is not a normal part of typical aging. While we cannot control our age, race, gender, or genes, we can control our behavior. Modifiable risk factors can reduce a person’s chances of developing dementia.
Known risk factors associated with the likelihood of dementia:
Hypertension
Hearing Loss
Physical inactivity
Diabetes
Smoking
Obesity
Excessive alcohol use
Depression
Social isolation
What can we do? It is in our power to improve our Brain health
- Exercise: regular physical activity combined with a healthy diet
- Manage blood sugar: higher blood glucose levels can lead to diabetes
- Prevent and manage high blood pressure: hypertension can increase the risk of stroke and vascular dementia
- Prevent and correct hearing loss: hearing loss affects cognition and social interaction
- Drink in moderation: too much alcohol may lead to falls or worsen other chronic conditions
- Quit smoking: lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, or lung disease
- Find support: depression is a medical condition that can be treated
- Brain stimulation: keep your mind active with games, crafts, and hobbies
- Social engagement: stay connected with family and friends
- Prevent head injury: reduce fall risk, wear supportive shoes, participate in fall prevention programs
