March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This year’s theme from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities is:
“We’re Here: Then, Now, Always.”
For us at Arista, that isn’t just a theme. It reflects what we see every single day in Lucas and Wood counties.
People with developmental disabilities have always been part of our community. They are sons and daughters. Neighbors. Coworkers. Friends. They are individuals with strengths, humor, preferences, and purpose.
And they deserve more than awareness. They deserve opportunity. Awareness Is a Beginning — Not the Destination
If you are a parent, sibling, or guardian, you already know this. Awareness doesn’t help your loved one master a new daily skill. It doesn’t help them feel confident walking into a community activity. It doesn’t ease the exhaustion of managing appointments, transportation, and support needs on your own.
Inclusion is what changes lives. But inclusion requires intention.
Too often, developmental disability support becomes about “maintenance” — keeping someone safe, supervised, and stable. Safety matters. Stability matters. But if we stop there, we unintentionally limit potential.
At Arista, we believe care should open doors.
“Our mission isn’t just to provide a service. It’s to help individuals grow, contribute, and live with dignity and purpose.”
Moving from Presence to Participation
“We’re Here: Then, Now, Always” reminds us that people with developmental disabilities are not temporary guests in our communities. They belong here. The real question becomes: Are we building systems that allow full participation?
Full participation means:
• Building routines around strengths — not just limitations
• Supporting community involvement, not isolation
• Creating person-centered plans that reflect real goals
• Ensuring families are supported, not overwhelmed
Inclusion should feel empowering — not exhausting.
As an Ohio DODD Certified Provider serving Lucas and Wood counties, we see firsthand how the right support can transform daily life.
For some families, that means:
• Reliable, respectful transportation to medical appointments and community activities
• A Direct Support Professional who understands behavioral goals and celebrates progress
• Respite care so parents can rest without guilt
• A care team that communicates clearly and consistently
For others, it means knowing someone locally is accountable and reachable when questions arise.
We are not a national chain. We are locally owned by Paula and Clayton Birney. We live here. We serve here. We answer our phones 24/7. And that matters.
A Personal Commitment
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is meaningful. But inclusion is not seasonal.
“We’re Here: Then, Now, Always” is a reminder that our work continues long after March ends.
At Arista, we are committed to walking alongside families — helping move from overwhelm to structure, from isolation to engagement, from “what if” to “what’s next.”
Because your loved one is here.
They have always been here.
And they will always be here.
And we are here with you.
