Favorite Fall Activities for Seniors in the Toledo Area

Fall is a cozy and colorful season in the Toledo area. With summer behind us, the leaves are changing, and football season is in full swing. Staying active and engaged is especially important for seniors, who benefit physically, mentally, and emotionally from spending time with family and friends. Whether your loved one prefers the indoors or the outdoors, here are some of our favorite activities to make the most of this beautiful season with the seniors you love.

Watch a Local Football Game

When most people think of fall, one of the first things that comes to mind is football. Watching a local game can be a great way to stay active and socially engaged. Bundle up and cheer on a grandchild’s team or bring the tailgating fun home!

Other great low-impact outdoor options include bocce or shuffleboard—perfect for crisp autumn afternoons. If your parent prefers to be at home, put on their alumni school’s team or a team they’ve always loved to help bring back old memories.

 Celebrate the Holidays

Fall holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving often bring back wonderful memories. Invite your parent to help decorate, choose candy, or sort treats — simple, engaging activities that provide a sense of purpose and joy.

Look through family photo albums together and share stories from past holidays. We do recommend avoiding places that are too scary or may provide too much stimulation, like haunted houses or haunted hayrides.

For Thanksgiving, delegate small tasks like folding napkins or decorating the table. Cook together using favorite family recipes, keeping in mind any dietary restrictions that may have developed.

And don’t forget Veterans Day on November 11th — it can be especially meaningful for parents who have served.

Enjoy the Fall Colors

Fall in the Toledo area is one of the most beautiful times of the year. October and November are perfect months to admire the vibrant reds, oranges, and golds of the changing trees. Take a scenic drive through the Toledo Metroparks, or along River Road or enjoy the view from a Fall Color Cruise on the Sandpiper along the Maumee River.

 Bake Some Fall Treats

There’s nothing like the smell of pumpkin bread or apple pie baking on a cool fall day. Baking is not only enjoyable but also provides gentle physical activity and a sense of accomplishment for older adults. Visit a local pumpkin patch or apple orchard – MacQueen’s Apple Orchard in Holland to gather ingredients for your own homemade treats.

Many area harvest festivals also offer crafts, seasonal foods, and an opportunity to stay connected to the community. If you need help caring for an aging parent, Arista Home Care is here for you. Contact us today to learn more about our compassionate in-home care services.
