Today I sat with a beautiful elderly couple as they held hands and told each other "I love you" for what might be the last time. He's on Hospice Care now and getting near to the end. He sleeps most of the time and does not always realize she is there. They have been together for over 60 years. All she wants is for him to stay at home. A simple request.
Their adult children have other plans. He has become too difficult to remain at home. They are running over there at all hours. Despite that he has only a short time left, they are moving him into a facility. Will she be there when he passes? A simple request.
Dealing with the death of a loved one is stressful. There are many questions to ask. Should we sell the car? Who is shopping, cooking? Are they safe at home? So many things to do and decisions to make, but this one is simple. Let him stay at home with his beloved wife so she can hold his hand and tell him she loves him one more time. Such a simple request.
